March 18, 2018
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is pleased to announce that a professor of family medicine at The Ohio State University has been elected ACSM president for 2010-2011.
Thomas Best, M.D., Ph.D., FACSM, is the Pomerene Chair of Primary Care and co-director of the university's sports medicine program, in addition to his position in family medicine. He is also the team physician for The Ohio State University men's hockey team and a consultant to American and Canadian national hockey teams.
Best will serve as president-elect of ACSM for one year before assuming his presidential duties June 5, 2010. Joining him on the newly elected Board of Trustees are nine other medical, health and research professionals (see below).
As ACSM president, Best plans to not only make scientific advancements in health and wellness during his term, but also impact health care and improve fitness internationally.
"ACSM is in an unprecedented position to contribute even more to the fields of sports medicine and exercise science in the United States - and, perhaps more importantly, globally - to the health and performance of all people," he said.
Best is a graduate of the University of Windsor (Canada), and attended medical school at the University of Western Ontario. In addition to his medical training, he holds a master's degree in kinesiology and a doctorate in biomedical engineering from Duke University.
Best's contributions to ACSM are substantial. He is the associate editor in chief of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise®, ACSM's official scientific journal, and has served on the board of trustees and as vice president of the organization during his 18 years of membership. His clinical interests include rehabilitation strategies for injuries and effect of aging on muscle injuries.
The American College of Sports Medicine is the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world. More than 35,000 international, national, and regional members and certified professionals are dedicated to advancing and integrating scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine.
