C-Arm Cone-Beam Computed Tomography With A Flat Panel Detector For Intraoperative Renal Imaging - Assessment Of Image Quality

ORLANDO, FL (UroToday) - Dr. Frank Burks and colleagues report a feasibly study of imaging with the use of a C-Arm Cone-Beam Computed Tomography. The technology potentially affords sectional imaging in the intra-operative setting using a mobile C-arm with a 190 degree automated orbital rotation.
Investigators report their experience with ex-vivo imaging of a porcine kidney (n=2). Images were obtained with and without contrast injection in a retrograde fashion into the artery, vein and collecting system of the specimen. The authors were able to differentiate renal parenchyma from surrounding tissues on non-contrast studies. Once contrast was injected, the investigators obtained images that differentiated key aspects of renal anatomy.
This technology may someday prove useful to urologists for real-time cross-sectional imaging in the intra-operative setting.
